ABOUT GYPSY CARAVAN TRIBAL BELLYDANCE(R)
HERE IS A STATEMENT FROM OUR FOUNDER, LEADER & INSTIGATOR OF GCTBD
Paulette Rees-Denis
I wanted to start here by sharing what is happening in our dance world. Since Gypsy Caravan's start up in 1991, we have seen many changes in the dance world, and with the dance forms. As we have grown around the globe with all you beautiful dancers and teachers, which is so exciting and fantastic, our dance too, has evolved. I am in the process of expanding and rebranding our image, only in its initial phases! Our new name will be Global Caravan Tribal Bellydance to encompass all that we are now. The name Gypsy Caravan will always be in our hearts, but it's time to reach out and stay connected with all and who we have grown into... This has no effect on you except eventually to change up the logos and your wording, as we develop the new images and all. This is very exciting and I am happy and proud of all of you and all that you bring to the dance world. These changes will take some time and I'm in no hurry but this will unfold in time... Thank you for being here with all of us around the globe, and for all that you bring to the dance.
Gypsy Caravan Tribal Bellydance began in the 1980's. Paulette Rees-Denis discovered tribal bellydance and went on to start her tribal journey and create a troupe of women dancing together, who all had the same tribal spirit of wanting to belong.
This organic, earthy and grounded tribal bellydance style is not pretentious, there are no claims to be authentic, as it proudly takes profound influences from genres across the globe. Incorporating an eclectic mix of North African, Egyptian, Moroccan, Arabic, Spanish, Tunisian, Indian and other cultures, this tribal style has evolved into a modern & contemporary dance lifestyle. The roots are firmly planted in the Middle East, using historical and traditional bellydance moves to create combinations which pay tribute to and acknowledge the past history of, bellydance. The dance, which is mostly improvised, has a modern bohemian style of it's own, with a free and spirited gypsy-like feel. This powerful but elegant and feminine dance is for everyone. It's inclusive. Your age, size, weight or fitness level is not important, but YOU are. Tribal bellydance will help to improve your stamina, core stability, balance and flexibility, plus the benefits of helping to develop confidence, self-esteem, inner strength, and an all-round 'feel good' factor, to achieve personal satisfaction, in yourself, your abilities and in your daily life. a silent language, using dance steps, cues, signs and signals to demonstrate and create an improvised dance. We learn moves and combinations, putting them together to acknowledge each other, so we can dance without confinement of choreography. It's being 'in the moment', in the 'here and now' to embrace, enjoy and experience. Being spiritual and powerful, but feminine and charismatic. It's exciting and fulfilling, whilst evoking deep feelings of satisfaction & contentment, being at peace, at one with yourself, soothing the soul from within. All encompassing and embracing the tribal spirit of true sisterhood and belonging. When we enter the tribal dance circle we leave our egos at the door. We are equals as women and individual souls and we are all unique and beautiful.
It's daunting but so exciting to be part of the improvised tribal bellydance culture. It helps you form strong bonds with women, makes you think for yourself, of yourself and of others. It gives you the confidence to feel and be who you truly are. The bellydance community is growing as more and more women, realise that you don't need to fit in with the typical, stereotyped, model and perfectly formed woman, that the media creates. You just need to be you. Accept yourself for who you are and love your self in the skin you are in. This dance is for everyone, no matter what your fitness level, your size, age, experience of dance or status in life. For many women, including myself, Tribal bellydance, becomes a way of life, not just another dance or fitness class to attend. It becomes embedded in your lifestyle, it helps you to develop personally and professionally.
